What Your Rounded Shoulders May Be Telling You

by |

Rounded shoulders are incredibly common, especially for people who spend a lot of their day sitting at a desk, looking at a phone, driving, or working on a computer. Over time, spending hours in these positions can change the way you naturally hold your upper body. You may notice your shoulders sitting farther forward, your upper back curving more than it used to, or your head beginning to drift in front of your shoulders. The good news is that a few daily habits can make a big difference in improving your posture and minimizing rounded shoulders.

Why Do Shoulders Start to Round Forward?

Your body gets used to the positions you spend the most time in. If your workday involves eight hours at a computer, your shoulders may gradually get used to that forward position. Rounded shoulders often go hand in hand with a more noticeable curve through the upper back. This increased forward curvature is known as kyphosis. Your upper spine naturally has some curve to it, but when that curve becomes more pronounced, it can affect your posture and make the shoulders appear even farther forward.

More Than a Posture Problem

Rounded shoulders can also affect the way your entire upper body moves. As your shoulders shift forward, your head may follow. That can put extra strain on the muscles around your neck and upper back. Some people begin noticing tightness between their shoulder blades, increased neck pain, or difficulty comfortably moving their shoulders through their full range of motion. Reaching overhead, lifting weights, or even swinging your arms naturally while walking may feel different when your shoulders aren’t moving well. All of these can be a sign that you need an adjustment.

Small Changes Throughout the Day Can Help

You don’t need to sit perfectly straight every minute of the day. In fact, staying in any one position for long periods of time can leave your body feeling stiff. Instead, give yourself opportunities to move. Stand up periodically during the workday. Roll your shoulders, stretch your chest, or take a quick walk down the hallway. Adjust your computer monitor so you aren’t constantly looking down, and try bringing your phone closer to eye level instead of dropping your head toward the screen. These habits don’t even require a major workout routine. A few minutes at a time can add up when you practice them consistently.
