What Is an Annular Tear and How Does It Affect the Spine?

by |

Back pain doesn’t always have an obvious cause. Sometimes, the problem lies deep within the structure of the spine—specifically in the discs that sit between the vertebrae. One common but often misunderstood issue is something called an annular tear.

The spine is made up of vertebrae, and between each there is a disc that acts as a shock absorber during movement. Each of these discs has a tough outer layer, called the annulus fibrosis, that covers the soft inner area, called the nucleus pulposus. When the tough outer ring is cracked or split, that’s known as an annulus tear.

These tears can range from mild to more serious and often go unnoticed at first. Over time, though, they can lead to discomfort, limited mobility, or even bigger disc problems if not properly addressed.

Why Do Annular Tears Happen?

Most often, annular tears happen because of wear and tear on the spine from repeated stress. This can include sitting for long periods of time, lifting improperly, or moving with poor posture, all of which can gradually weaken your discs. Injuries or sudden twisting motions may also cause a tear, especially when the spine is already under stress.

You may not even realize this tear has happened until you feel a dull and lingering pain in the lower back, or even occasional sharp pains during movement. In some cases, the inner disc can even begin to push through the tear and put pressure on nearby nerves, which causes radiating pain, numbness, or tingling sensations.

How It Affects Daily Life

Even a small tear can disrupt normal spinal function. The discs rely on their structure to maintain proper height and movement between vertebrae. When that structure weakens, the spine becomes less stable. Everyday tasks like bending over, getting out of bed, or standing for long periods can feel more difficult and uncomfortable.

Annular tears can also contribute to longer-term issues if left unaddressed. As the disc degenerates further, it may lead to bulging or herniation, which can cause even more discomfort and can further limit mobility.

A Natural Approach to Spinal Health

Dr. Thomas Keogh and the team at Bare Chiropractic understand how important it is to keep the spine functioning at its best. Support from a Billings chiropractor doesn’t involve masking pain. Instead, it focuses on promoting proper alignment and helping the body work the way it’s designed to.

This care plays a key role in reducing stress on the spine and allowing the body to heal more efficiently. When the spine is aligned, pressure on the discs is more evenly distributed, helping to prevent further damage and supporting natural recovery.

Helping You Move Better, Feel Better

Dealing with an annular tear doesn’t have to mean giving up your favorite activities or being in pain forever. Chiropractic care is a proactive way to support spinal health for the long term.
